In the past, Kaiserslautern has held a New Years Eve Market that takes place after Christmas until New Years Eve, but for 2025, the Lautrer Advent will be done by December 23rd.

The main festivities are centered around Schillerplatz and the Collegiate Church, or Stiftskirche, in the heart of the city. You can also find stalls on Marktstraße and Stiftsplatz. Together, these areas create a festive circuit that is easy to walk around and enjoy the markets.

The celebration stretches further into the city with the Kulturmarkt inside the Fruchthalle from November 27th to December 21st Thursdays to Sundays. You can also find the market in the Edith-Stein-Haus from November 29th to December 7th daily with handcrafted items.

How To Get There

The Kaiserslautern Christmas market is easily accessible either by car or train.

To save yourself some stress looking for parking, consider using public transportation. The local train station, Kaiserslautern Hbf, is about a 10 – 15 minute walk from the pedestrian area where the Christmas market is located.

Using the train also gives you the freedom to enjoy a few extra mugs of Glühwein without worrying about driving home afterwards.

Parking Options in Kaiserslautern:

Food & Drink At the Lautrer Advent

Of course, no Christmas market would be completed without its food and drink, and Kaiserslautern delivers on every front. I swear the air is thick with the scent of sizzling bratwurst, freshly baked Dampfnudeln, and roasted nuts, all classic German staples that taste better at a festival.

Other food options you can find are Kartoffelpuffer, or fried potato pancakes, served with applesauce. My personal favorite though is the Kartoffel Twister, which is a fried twisted potato on a stick with your choice of seasonings.

Protein options you can always find at the Kaiserslautern Christmas market includes steak or pork sandwiches, and numerous flavors of bratwursts. My personal favorite is the cheesy filled brats called käsewurst.

Once you get your savory fill of food, there are plenty of sweet options located around the market as well.

You’ll want to try Lebkuchen, which is a chewy, gingerbread-like German Christmas cookie, candied almonds, chocolate covered fruit, waffles, or crepes.

Another staple at any German festival, including the Christmas markets, is Dampfnudeln, which is fluffy steamed dumpling that is served with vanilla sauce and has a crispy bottom. It’s absolutely divine, served warm, and you’ll love every bite.

As for the drinks at the Kaiserslautern Christmas market, there is something for everyone.

You’ll find steaming mugs of mulled wine, or Glühwein, which are served in collectible mugs that make a fun souvenir. Glühwein is offered with red wine, white wine which is a bit sweeter, or you can even find some flavored berry wines, which are my personal favorite.

There is usually a stall at Schillerplatz that offers straight wine in wine glasses if you’re not interested in mulled wine.

If wine isn’t your thing, there is always Kinderpunsch, a spiced non-alcoholic punch, or rich hot chocolate topped with whipped cream.

Top Tips for Visiting

There’s quite a few tips to keep in mind when visiting the Kaiserslautern Christmas market to make the most of your time.

Tips for visiting the Kaiserslautern Christmas market

Dress for the Weather

December in Kaiserslautern can be chilly, damp, and sometimes even snowy, so dressing appropriately will make a huge difference in your experience.

Wear layers, including thermal shirts, a warm coat, gloves, a hat and a scarf. Waterproof shoes or boots are also a good idea since the bricks and cobblestones can get slick in the rain or snow.

If you plan to stay for several hours, consider bringing hand warmers to tuck into your gloves or pockets. Staying comfortable mens you can enjoy the lights, music, and food without rushing back indoors.

Bring Cash

Although Germany is slowly becoming more card friendly, many Christmas market stalls in Kaiserslautern still prefer cash. Having euros on hand will make transactions faster and easier, especially for smaller purchases like drinks, snacks, or handmade ornaments.

To avoid long waits, withdraw money before you arrive. There is an ATM located near Marktstraße if you need to take out more euros.

For your drinks, the pfand, or deposit for your mug, can range from €3.00 – €7.00+ depending on the size of the mug and drink.

Are Dogs Allowed?

While Germany is quite dog friendly, I would only recommend taking your furry friend during the week and earlier in the day before the crowds start. You wouldn’t want your dog to get stepped on or accidentally step on broken glass.
