Heidelberg, Germany

1. Driving and Traffic Rules

Germany is renowned for its well-maintained roads and efficient autobahns. However, strict driving regulations must be followed. Stay in the right lane except when overtaking, and remember that there are often speed limits, especially in urban areas. Some may think the autobahn is mainly unrestricted, but unfortunately, that’s not true and only certain sections.

Also, be cautious of pedestrians, as they have the right of way at designated crosswalks. Be aware of all the hidden, or not so hidden, speed cameras on the roads. If you see a flash, they got you and expect a ticket in the mail a few months later.

2. Always Have Euro on Hand

The Euro (€) is the official currency in Germany. While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s wise to carry cash, especially in smaller towns where card payments might be less common. Cash is key for Germany. Familiarize yourself with ATM locations and currency exchange rates to make the most of your money. Also to note, usually American Express credit cards have not been accepted in many areas.

3. Surprise! Water and Toilets Aren’t Free

It’s customary to pay for water in restaurants, but you can ask for tap water at no cost. Water at restaurants come in a glass bottle, and you have the option of still or sparkling. To ask for tap water at restaurants, ask for Leitungswasser.

When using public restrooms, be prepared to pay a small fee for maintenance. Rest assured, the facilities are usually clean and well-maintained. Just like keeping euro on hand, it’s important to keep small coins on you as well for using the toilets. The price is usually €0.50 to €1.00.

4. Learn Basic German

While English is commonly spoken, locals appreciate travelers who make an effort to speak their language. Equip yourself with basic German phrases for greetings, ordering food, and asking for directions. Your attempts will be met with warm smiles and a deeper connection to the culture.

  • Hello = Hallo
  • Yes/No = Ja/Nein
  • Please = Bitte
  • Thank you = Danke
  • Do you speak English? = Sprichst du Englisch?

Another great Germany tip is having Google Translate on your phone to help translate menus, signs, or anything at a grocery or convenient store. You can also download the language you want when your phone is offline. It’s a great asset while traveling to any country.

5. Recycling Every Little Thing

Germany is a pioneer in recycling, and you’ll find separate bins for various materials everywhere. Get acquainted with the recycling system, which often involves categories such as paper in blue, glass separate, plastic in yellow, and organic waste. Contributing to this eco-friendly practice is a way to respect the environment and the local customs.

At many markets and festivals, you pay a deposit for the bottle or glass with incentive to return back for your money. Honestly, I love how detailed their recycling is for the planet.

6. Respecting Punctuality & Rules

Respecting rules and etiquette is a cornerstone of German society, extending to various aspects of daily life. Whether it’s navigating the streets as a pedestrian or driving on the autobahn, understanding and adhering to these norms demonstrate your appreciation for the local culture. Jaywalking, for instance, is considered a breach of road safety. It’s crucial to use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals to ensure your safety and that of others.

Embracing these rules and customs not only enhances your travel experience but also demonstrates your consideration for the country’s traditions and values.

7. Meal Etiquette

Mealtime etiquette reflects German traditions. Wait for everyone to be served before eating, and use utensils rather than hands, even for foods like pizza. While tipping isn’t obligatory, rounding up the bill or leaving a modest tip is appreciated.

Americans are used to rushing through a meal to then pay and leave. In Germany (and Europe), having a meal is a social gathering that can last a few hours of enjoying each other’s company.

8. Exploring Regional Cuisine

Germany’s cuisine is a tapestry of regional flavors. Don’t miss iconic dishes like bratwurst, schnitzel, Black Forest cake, pretzels, and strudel. Each region offers its own gastronomic delights, so venture beyond the well-known and discover local specialties. In addition to all the delicious food in Germany, make sure to experience all the beer and wine around each region.

9. Efficient Exploration with Transportation

Germany boasts an efficient public transportation network. Trains and buses are well-connected, offering a convenient and eco-friendly way to explore cities and regions without the hassle of driving and parking.

Deutsche Bahn is great for all your train needs while traveling in Germany. Whether its a regional train to get somewhere close, or an ICE high-speed train, public transportation within Germany is a must. Keep in mind that trains can be late or cancelled though.

10. Quiet Hours & Using Your Inside Voice

Many neighborhoods and accommodations observe quiet hours during the afternoon, 1:00pm to 3:00pm, and late at night. Adhere to noise restrictions, particularly in residential areas, to ensure a harmonious atmosphere for all. In addition to daily quiet hours, Sunday is also known as a rest and quiet day.

Many stores and supermarkets are closed, with the exception of restaurants, cafes, museums, and historical landmarks. If you’re used to your Sundays as a catch up day, you better change that to Saturday!

In addition to the quiet hours in Germany, using your inside voice is another thing to keep in mind while you’re out. If you’re used to a restaurant being loud with the bustling guests, think again. Being noisy and disruptive in restaurants, cafes, and shops is considered rude.

11. Navigating Grocery Shopping & Fast Checkouts

When shopping at any grocery store, remember to bring your own reusable bags, as many stores charge a small fee for paper or reusable bags, aligning with Germany’s commitment to environmental conservation. You also have to bag your groceries yourself. Majority of people just place their groceries back into their cart then bag them at their car.

Another culture shock with grocery shopping is the insane amount of speed in which the cashiers scan your items. Known for their precision and orderliness, German supermarkets prioritize quick and seamless transactions. As you approach the cashier, be prepared to pack your items quickly yet efficiently, often using the provided packing area to organize your purchases. It’s wild your first time experiencing this race on if you can bag your items in time.

12. plan For the Unpredictable Weather

The weather in Germany can be unpredictable. The summer of 2022 was scorching hot hitting as high as mid 90s °F. Where the fall, winter, and spring can be extremely wet, rainy, and gloomy. The winters can also have snow from time to time. Prepare for the days where where you can hit all 4 weather seasons in one day.

One of the best Germany tips I can give is always plan for layers depending on the season and always carry an umbrella or rain jacket when traveling. I traveled for a few months summer 2023 and came back to Germany with 3 weeks of straight rain. As the Germans say, “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.”
