Hiking
A visit to Montserrat promises an array of captivating experiences. The mountain offers numerous hiking trails, each leading to hidden treasures like Santa Cova, a small chapel nestled in a cliffside grotto. There are signs located around the trails with details on each hike.
Montserrat Monastery
The highlight of any Montserrat trip is the abbey. Witnessing the Black Madonna is a profound and spiritual encounter for many visitors, and does cost to see up close. You can sit for a church service, or enter to visit for a few minutes. You will not be disappointed with the stunning architecture.
Museum of Montserrat
The monastery also houses a museum featuring works by renowned artists like Picasso and Dalí. The Museum of Montserrat costs €8.00 per adult, €6.50 per student, retired, or groups of 20 or more, and €4.00 per child. They are open daily from 10:00am until 5:45pm. The museum can easily take an hour to walk through.
Funicular Ride to the Top
For the adventurous souls, a funicular ride to the top of Sant Jeroni, the highest point in Montserrat, rewards you with unparalleled vistas of the surrounding countryside. Be sure to bring your camera!
Food & Drink
There is a cafe, as well as a small store at the top if you would like a snack, water, coffee, or anything else you would need. We grabbed water, kombucha, and some pastries and it was the perfect treat for the morning.
When we were also visiting, there was a small farmers market with local cheese, meats, and honey being sold! We ended up buying a small 3 pack of honey and a few honey lollipops to try!
Transportation to Montserrat
Montserrat is conveniently located near Barcelona, making it easily accessible for visitors. Only just about an hour away, you can visit by numerous ways of transportation.
Train or Railway
You can reach it by train from Barcelona’s Plaça d’Espanya station, followed by a cable car or rack railway ascent to the mountain. Check out Montserrat Rack Railway and Funicular for all your tickets to Montserrat and for the funicular rides on top.
By Car
Another option is to rent a car and drive. This provides more flexibility, as you can explore the surrounding areas at your leisure. You get to enjoy the scenic route up to the top. Fair warning, the road to the top of the mountain is extremely winding and can potentially make you sick, as it did for me.
Organized Tour
One more option would be an organized tour. Many tour operators offer day trips from Barcelona, or other surrounding cities, providing hassle-free transportation and a guided tour experience. We took a group tour through Get Your Guide.
We chose the From Barcelona: Montserrat Monastery Visit & Lunch at a Farmhouse tour. The farmhouse lunch was phenomenal and the views were even better. There are quite a few other Get Your Guide tours for Montserrat that are highly recommended.
Tips for Visiting Montserrat
Timing
Montserrat is a popular destination, so plan your visit accordingly. Mornings are usually less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the tranquility of the abbey and explore the trails in peace.
If you plan to drive, keep in mind for parking up at the top as well. Going during peak times can limit what you can see depending on how much time you have.
What to Wear & Bring
Wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers, as the weather on the mountain can change rapidly. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and sunscreen, especially if you plan on hiking. It was definitely a bit cooler than we anticipated while visiting with the wind.
Accommodations
While day trips are common, staying overnight at Montserrat allows you to experience the serene atmosphere once the crowds disperse. The monastery offers basic accommodation options for pilgrims, or you can choose from a range of hotels and guesthouses in the nearby towns.
Religious Etiquette
When visiting the abbey, maintain a respectful demeanor and adhere to the dress code. Avoid loud conversations or disruptive behavior in areas of worship. They still have services throughout the day and week.
