There are also several pavilions that showcase different types of flowers, including hydrangeas, daffodils, and orchids. These pavilions offer information on the history of the flowers, facts, and even plenty of photo ops!
In addition to the gardens themselves, Keukenhof also offers a variety of activities and events. Visitors can take a boat tour of the surrounding tulip fields, watch flower arranging demonstrations, and listen to live music performances.

They have multiple souvenir stores all throughout the gardens, as well as a huge store right at the entrance. I did notice they almost all sell the same things, so if you see something in the back of the gardens, you can purchase it before walking out at the front.
Getting to Keukenhof
There are quite a few ways to visit Keukenhof Gardens.
By Car: If you plan on exploring around the area or even country, most likely you’ll be renting a car or driving from your home area. We had our base out of Noordwijk, which was about a 20 minute drive to Lisse. It was easily accessible and we were able to enjoy all the beach side restaurants.
By Bus: Another option is to take the Keukenhof Express Bus. The Express Bus leaves from Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam RAI, Leiden Central Station, and Haarlem Station. You can choose to purchase a combiticket that includes roundtrip bus tickets and your entrance to Keukenhof.
Organized Tour: A third option would be through either a guided tour or tour group that includes transportation. Additionally, some tour groups offer trips to visit Keukenhof paired with other attractions nearby.
- Keukenhof Entry & Flexible Shuttlebus – This tour from Amsterdam offers numerous options to pair your entrance tickets with other tours such as with a windmill cruise or a canal cruise in Amsterdam. They also offer return flexibility with shuttles running every 30 minutes.
- Keukenhof Entry with Shuttlebus – This tour offers an audio guide from Amsterdam learning the Dutch culture, with your entry ticket included, with a shuttle back to Amsterdam about 4-5 hours later. You’ll also have the option to add a canal cruise if interested.
- Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans Day Tour – On this 9 hour day tour from Amsterdam, you’ll first spend about 3.5 hours on a guided tour through Keukenhof, then make your way to Zaanse Schans for a wooden shoe workshop and a visit to Catharina Hoeve Cheese Farm before visiting the famous Zaanse Schans windmills.

Tips for Visiting Keukenhof Gardens
Because Keukenhof Gardens are only open for a short time, a little planning goes a long way. These essential Keukenhof tips for 2026 will help you avoid crowds, see the best blooms, and make the most of your visit.

Best Time to Visit for Peak Bloom
Personally, the best time I say to plan your trip to Keukenhof would be around mid April. The bloom of the tulips all depend on the weather and nature, making it a bit difficult to determine the absolute best time for ultimate bloom.
Earlier in the season, you can see flowers such as crocuses, daffodils, and hyacinths that bloom early. Later on in the season, you can see the larger tulips blooming.
Keukenhof’s website does offer a flower report to stay up to date on the bloom, but if you’re coming from outside of Europe and the Netherlands, it’s a little more difficult to plan.

Choosing the Best Day & Time
Timing your visit can completely change your experience at Keukenhof. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Arriving right at opening time or visiting in the late afternoon allows you to enjoy the gardens with fewer people and better lighting for photography. We booked our tickets for right after opening and it was perfect. By the time we were leaving around 12:30, the crowds were getting insane.
Also avoid visiting during major holidays such as Easter or King’s Day if possible, as these dates tend to be the busiest of the season.
Cash vs. Card
Keukenhof Gardens is completely cashless, so you’ll only pay for food, drink, and souvenirs with a debit or credit card.

Can You Bring Your Dog?
Dogs are allowed inside Keukenhof Gardens. They must remain on a leash at all times and they are not allowed inside the pavilions and restaurants, with the only exception of guide dogs. You can also find poop bags for your dogs at the entrance.
Keukenhof offers entertainment and musical performances throughout the gardens, so your dog must be used to loud noises and potentially stressful environments, especially with the crowds. One more thing to note, there is a limit to one dog per person entering the gardens.
Is Keukenhof Handicap Accessible?
Keukenhof offers rentals for wheelchairs on their website. They also allow for electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters inside the gardens if you do own your own, they just don’t offer those for rent.
The gardens offer mostly flat cement walk ways they provide ease for people with a disability. There may be some areas that aren’t accessible, but the majority of the gardens certainly are. You can also find benches around the gardens to stop and sit if needed.

Packing the Essentials
You’ll be doing a lot of walking at Keukenhof, so comfortable shoes are essential.
Spring weather in the Netherlands can change quickly, with sun, wind, and rain all possible in one day. Dressing in layers and bringing a light rain jacket will help you stay comfortable no matter the conditions.
While there are cafés and food stands inside the gardens, lines can be long during busy periods. So bringing your own refillable water bottle with a small snack allows you more time to enjoy the gardens and less time waiting in lines. Just keep in mind you cannot bring your own food and drink into the restaurants or on the terraces.
If you’re planning on taking plenty of pictures and videos while inside Keukenhof, I recommend a portable charger to keep your battery from dying, as well as favorite smaller camera for all the best photos.

Bollenstreek Tulip Festival
If you’re planning a trip to Lisse and Keukenhof, be sure to check the dates of the annual Spring Festival. This festival typically takes place in mid-April and includes a variety of events and activities, including parades, live music, and fireworks.
The 2026 Tulip Festival takes place April 15th – 19th, with the parade on Saturday, April 18th.
A few days before the parade, you can watch the floats being decorated in Sassenheim. On the Friday evening, you can view the floats illuminated with thousands of lamps as they drive through Noordwijkerhout.
During the Saturday of the festival, one main highlight is the 42 kilometer (26 miles) parade route that showcases numerous colorful and decorated flower floats. The parade starts in Noordwijk Beach, travels through Voorhout, Sassenheim, Lisse, all the way to Haarlem.
Be sure to get to your spot early, as this parade attracts thousands of spectators.

There are many grand stand seating options along the route, as well as street standing to viewing all the beautiful flower floats. Depending on where you’re viewing the parade, it can last all day due to the length.
During the festival, many of the surrounding tulip farms also open their doors to visitors. This provides a unique opportunity to see the tulip fields up close and learn more about the tulip industry in the Netherlands.
Visiting the Surrounding Fields
While Keukenhof Gardens is undoubtedly the main attraction in Lisse, visitors should also make time to explore all of the surrounding tulip fields.
The Netherlands is the world’s largest exporter of tulips, and the fields around Lisse are filled with colorful rows of flowers in the spring.

By Bike
One popular way to see the tulip fields is by bike. There are several bike rental shops in Lisse, and visitors can rent a bike and follow the designated tulip route.
This scenic route takes visitors through the heart of the tulip fields, with opportunities to stop and take pictures along the way.
If you’re visiting Keukenhof, there is a bike rental across from the parking lot, so once you’re finished visiting, keep your car parked in the lot and head over to take a bike ride to see the surrounding fields.

The Tulip Barn
Another option to visiting tulips outside of Keukenhof is the Tulip Barn. The Tulip Barn offers a place for people to enjoy the tulips without harm, while taking as many pictures as they like. There are numerous props for your pictures all over the grounds, as well as a greenhouse for coffee and snacks.
The Tulip Barn opens their gates March 27th until May 10th, 2026. Tickets for the Tulip Barn are also timed tickets, so when you purchase online, you will choose a time slot.
Hours for the Tulip Barn are 9:30 am until 7:00 pm Monday through Sunday, with Fridays ending at 9:00 pm.
Admission prices for 2026:
- Adults & Children ages 13+: €10.00
- Children ages 3-12: €4.50
- Family (2 adults + 2 children): €25.00
One thing to note while visiting the Tulip Barn is they have limited parking, so they recommend either public transportation or a scenic bike ride. You can take a short train ride to Hillegom station followed by a 15-20 minute walk.

How to Grow Your Own Tulips
If you’re inspired by the beauty of the tulips while visiting Keukenhof Gardens and the surrounding fields, you may be interested in growing tulips of your own. You can purchase tulip bulbs in numerous stores throughout the Netherlands, especially if you’re visiting Amsterdam.

Here are some tips for growing tulips:
- Plant bulbs in the fall: Tulips are planted in the fall, typically between September and November, before the ground freezes.
- Choose a sunny location. Tulips need full sun to thrive, so choose a location that gets minimum six hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Prepare the soil: Tulips prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Add compost or other organic matter to the soil before planting.
- Plant bulbs at the right depth. Tulip bulbs should be planted at a depth that is three times the height of the bulb. For example, a 2-inch bulb should be planted 6 inches deep.

Visiting Keukenhof is such a bucket list item that you have to visit once in your life to surround yourself with the beauty. The amount of education they also provide regarding the flowers is such a nice touch when visiting. If you ever get the chance to visit, I highly recommend it. I hope this complete guide to visiting Keukenhof Gardens and beyond helps you plan your trip!
