History of Dinant

Dinant’s history stretches back to the Middle Ages, when it became a prosperous trading city thanks to its strategic location along the Meuse River. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Dinant was famous for its skilled metalworkers, particularly for producing dinanderie, a type of decorative brassware exported across Europe.

The city’s location also made it a frequent target of conflict. Dinant was nearly destroyed multiple times, most notably during World War I, when German troops devastated the city in 1914. Much of what you see today has been carefully rebuilt, giving Dinant its charming yet resilient character.

Dinant is also famously the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the investor of the saxophone, which is something you’ll notice throughout the city in a playful and artistic way.

Things to Do in Dinant

While you plan your trip to Dinant and Belgium, this is the perfect day trip or overnight city to stay in to explore. There is quite a few things to fill your day with while you’re visiting.

Notre Dame de Dinant

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Dinant, the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame sits dramatically between the Meuse River and the towering limestone cliffs.

Originally built in the 13th century, the church was rebuilt after a rockfall destroyed part of it, giving it its unique Gothic design topped with an onion-shaped dome. It’s renowned for its stunning stained-glass windows and ornate decorations.

Immediately walking into the church, they offer a brochure with information about the cathedral and stained-glass windows. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the cathedral to learn more about its history and architecture.

The church is free to enter. Don’t pass up a chance to visit this beautiful site!

Visit the Citadel

Rising high above the town, the Citadel of Dinant offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Meuse Valley.

Visitors can reach the citadel by either taking the cable car (season dependent) or climbing the 408 steps to the top. We did the steps and holy moly, it was a workout!

Inside the Citadel, you’ll find exhibits detailing Dinant’s military past, including medieval defenses and the city’s role during World War I.

Admission for the Citadel changes per season. During the off season, adults are €14.00 and children ages 4 – 12 are €12.00.

They also offer a “3 in 1 Formula” that combines Earth, Air, and Water, which is visiting the Citadel (earth), taking the cable car (air), and boat trip on the Meuse (water). Prices for the “3 in 1” are €22.00 for adults and €16.00 for children.

There is also a restaurant, playground, and overlook with breathtaking views of the city and surrounding countryside. For more information, check out Citadel Website for hours, prices, and other useful information, such as closures due to off season.

Maison Leffe

Maison Leffe is a popular attraction for beer enthusiasts visiting Dinant. The brewery offers visitors a chance to learn about the history of the Leffe beer brand and taste its various flavors.

Founded in 1240 by Norbertine monks, they brewed beer as a way to raise funds for their abbey. Over time, the brewery became one of the most well-known in Belgium, and its beers were exported around the world.

Today, visitors to Maison Leffe can take a guided tour of the brewery to learn about the brewing process and the history of the Leffe brand.

The interactive tour includes a visit to the brewery’s museum, which showcases the tools and techniques used to brew beer in the past and present.

At the end of the tour, visitors can sample a variety of Leffe beers, including the Blonde, Brown, Ruby, and Triple. Each beer has a unique flavor and is made with different ingredients, such as coriander and orange peel. They even offer an alcoholic-free Blonde to sample and purchase.

Your ticket includes the tour, a sample of your choosing, two cans and a glass Leffe cup all for €15.00! Honestly, it’s a steal for the price and such an amazing experience.

Boat Ride on the Meuse River

One of the best easy to experience the beauty of Dinant is by taking a relaxing boat ride on the Meuse River. The river winds its way through the city, offering stunning views of the surrounding country side.

Visitors can choose from a variety of boat tours, ranging from a short 30-minute cruise to a longer, more extensive tour.

Saxophone Hunting

Dinant is the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, and his legacy is celebrated throughout the city.

Visit the Maison Adolphe Sax, a small free museum located near his childhood home, to learn more about his life and inventions. As you wander through town, keep an eye out for musical references, statues, and art installations that reflect Dinant’s deep connection to music.

There are about 70 saxophone statues painted and dedicated to other countries, as well as a statue of Adolphe himself. Can you find all the painted saxophones around the city?

Indulge in the Local Cuisine

Belgium is renowned for its cuisine, and Dinant is no exception. The city is home to a range of restaurants and cafes, offering everything from traditional Belgian dishes to more modern cuisine.

For those looking to indulge in local specialties, there are plenty of options, including mussels and frites, waffles, and chocolate.

If you have a sweet tooth, there are plenty of local treats to try, including Belgian waffles, chocolate, and speculoos, a type of spiced cookie.

There is the cutest pastry shop , Patisserie-Boulangerie et Fabrique de Couques Jacobs. We were educated on the history of the “Couque of Dinant,” a hard cookie-like dessert made in Dinant. Dating back to the 15th century, the couques are made of only honey and flour.

A tip to eating this masterpiece is to break into small fragments to melt in the mouth or soak in coffee. Indulging in the beautifully made couques and pastries is the perfect way to spend a day in the city.

Additionally, be sure to visit the Cosy Lounge for a quick treat of coffee and sandwiches. The staff are absolutely delightful and so genuinely sweet. I recommend trying the ham and cheese croissant sandwich with added butter.

Here are some of the best essential travel tips to know planning your visit to Dinant.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Dinant is from late spring through early fall (May to September), when the weather is pleasant and the Meuse River cruises are operating.

Summer brings longer days and a lively atmosphere, while late spring and early autumn are ideal if you prefer fewer crowds and slightly cooler temperatures.

Winter visits are quieter and atmospheric but limited in terms of activities. We visited in March, when it was quite chilly and unfortunately the cable car was not running.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Dinant may be small, but it involves a lot of walking on cobblestone streets, stairs, and inclines, especially if you plan to visit the citadel. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and if you plan to climb the steps instead of taking the cable car, good traction will make the experience much easier.

Bring Cash for Small Purchases

The official currency in Dinant is euro (€).

While most places accept cards, it’s still useful to carry a small amount of cash for bakeries, souvenir shops, or market stalls selling Couques de Dinant. ATMs are available in town, but having cash on hand can save time.

Check Opening Hours in Advance

Some attractions, museums, and boat cruises operate on seasonal schedules, particularly outside of peak summer months. Always check official opening hours ahead of time to avoid disappointment, especially if you’re visiting in early spring or late fall.

Language

Dinant is located in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. While French is the primary language, English is widely understood, particularly in hotels and restaurants.

Learning a few basic French phrases is appreciated and can enhance your experience with locals.

Combine Dinant with Nearby Destinations

If you have more time, Dinant pairs well with nearby destinations like Namur, the Meuse Valley villages, or the Ardennes. Travelers with a car can easily turn a Dinant visit into a multi-day itinerary exploring castles, hiking trails, and riverside towns nearby.

If you’re looking into exploring more of Belgium, you can drive the hour and fifteen minute drive to spend two day in Brussels exploring.

Dinant is a city that has something to offer everyone. From its rich history and stunning architecture to its outdoor activities and culinary delights, there is no shortage of things to do and see. Whether you’re visiting for a day or a week, Dinant is a must-see destination in Belgium. So why not plan your trip today and discover all that this charming city has to offer.
